Homeowners concerned about indoor air quality generally prefer direct vent hearth products.  A direct vent fireplace, stove or insert has a combustion area completely sealed from room air, and pulls in 100% of the oxygen needed for the fire from outside of the house. A smaller pipe inside the larger pipe eliminates all combustible gases, maintaining indoor air quality. Direct Vent fireplaces can be vented either vertically or horizontally.  Heated air radiates off the glass front, and room air circulates around the back of the firebox to emerge as heated air.

"Natural Vent" fireplaces are atmospherically vented - similar to traditional masonry fireplaces or stoves - but with metal "B-vent" pipe. B-vent fireplaces are always vented vertically to the outside, and use room air for combustion.  Performance is less predictable than with direct vent models because it is dependent on air flow and pressues within the home.
