Trees are harvested for building, paper products, and many other purposes in addition to heating.  The harvested wood stores the carbon those trees had absorbed over their lifetime.  Burning wood and wood pellets will release the carbon as combustion gases.  Sustainable growth forests grow new trees for all wood uses - growing much more than is used for heating - thus closing the carbon loop at an environmentally responsible rate.

Coal also has stored carbon that is released when burned.  However, it takes millions of years for coal to form; it only takes 5-10 years to grow new trees that can be used for fuel.

With forest management and responsible wood burning, we can all work together to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and sustain our environment.
