The Hearth Education Foundation has created the following video to help teach consumers how to safely light the pilot for their gas or propane fireplace, stove or insert.  Important note: once the pilot lights, continue to press in on the valve knob for approximately 30 seconds before releasing it and turning it to the ON position.  This will allow the pilot flame to heat the pilot assembly sufficiently so that the pilot may remain lit.

A pellet gun is not desengid to withstand the pressures you would generate. You will destroy your gun, and in all likelihood important parts of your body. Now as to firing a blank in a real gun, there is still a chance of damage to the gun and yourself. The powder loaded into blanks is very fast burning, and is not intended to have any restriction in the bore. There are some blanks that are the exception, but I doubt that you would be able to tell the difference without spending a lot of time in study.
